The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
