The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
