Early Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events leading up to this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with further updates expected as events unfold.
