RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
